Vaughan libraries and community centers are closed due to staff shortages caused by the Omicron variant

For Vaughan, enough is enough.

Due to a staff shortage, the city announced on December 28 that it will temporarily cancel in-person recreational programming as well as community center services.

According to the city, the shortages are the result of an increase in COVID-19 cases as the province struggles with the Omicron variant over the holidays.

The closures, which take effect on December 30, will result in the permanent shutdown of city-run fitness centers, libraries, and pools.

Officials stated that the changes were made to ensure the safety of both employees and customers, and that closures will begin only after the end of the day on December 29.

Some virtual programming will be maintained.

"As the global COVID-19 pandemic evolves and the Omicron variant spreads rapidly across Ontario and Canada, the City of Vaughan remains focused on monitoring and responding to the situation in order to protect citizens, businesses, and the larger community," the city said in a statement.

Some libraries, including Bathurst Clark, Civic Centre, and Pierre Berton, will remain open despite changes to safety protocols.

Except on Friday, December 31 and Saturday, January 1, curbside pickup will be available at all libraries from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. every day.

"Decisions about in-person winter recreational programming have not yet been made and will be dependent on Omicron data and staffing resources," the statement continues.
